According to the law of conservation of energy, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can be transformed from one form to the other. Energy conversion is possible but creating energy and destroying it is not possible.


Example of Law of Conservation of Energy


Let us try to understand with a simple example of free fall of an object. Free fall means the object is being dropped from certain height with initial velocity equal to zero. When we talk about conservation of energy, we consider the system as an isolated system and no transfer (loss) of energy is considered from or to the system. Therefore, we will not consider the air resistance while discussing the example of free fall.

At the top, from where the object is being dropped, it has only potential energy and no kinetic energy as velocity is zero. When object is dropped it starts falling down under effect of gravity and as it falls down, its potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. As a result the kinetic energy of the object increases and potential energy decreases. At any point the decrease in potential energy is equal to the increase in kinetic energy. The moment when object hits the ground, the entire potential energy is converted into kinetic energy and this kinetic energy is equal to the potential energy of the object at the top.

One more Example of Law of Conservation of Energy


You might have enjoyed swinging in a swing in children’s park. Movement of swing is a very good example of conservation of energy. When we displace it from its mean position, it acquires potential energy and when we release it, it starts moving towards the mean position under the effect of restoring force and its potential energy starts converting into kinetic energy. When swing reaches the mean position entire potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy and swing has maximum kinetic energy at mean position. Now, it starts moving in the other direction with this kinetic energy. As it goes away from the mean position, it kinetic energy starts converting into potential energy at extreme point, entire kinetic energy is converted into potential energy. Now, once again it comes towards the mean position under effect of restoring force. This way swing keeps on moving from one end to the other.
